Many of my paintings depict richly detailed scenes and reflect my own deep interest in the lives of people and their work. The style of my art has a figurative, colourful element which is a partial response to the visual impressions received. It is a synthesis of all of my senses. ..especially of intuition and knowing ....those most internal of journey senses.
I enjoy painting en plein air, where I endeavour to capture the subtle spirit and flavour of place...ranging from bold colours to the subtlest of shades..creating a tapestry of values which infuse.. and bring to life... the subject matter.
I am rarely without a sketchbook.. working mainly in pen and watercolour... enabling me to introduce considered, salient detail with my pen.. which is balanced by the freedom and breadth of my washes.
I paint to an internal beat, an instrument of a sublime energy.. which I sense infuses all things..all of life.. rhythmically working into my oils..often with a palette knife, allowing the paint to freely ebb and flow across the canvas... inscribing and indenting the paint as the energy and mood takes me.
In my studio... the subtler contemplative and meditative processes are fully engaged... association of place...smells, tastes and textures come vividly to mind, percolating deeply into my paintings....freeing the mind... and richening the experience.
