Hannah Davies – English Artist
(b. London 1972)
Hannah was brought up in the Westcountry with two siblings. From an artistic background her father graduated in Art and Design from the Bournemouth Municipal College of Art, her mother studied needlework at Newland Park Buckinghamshire and her brother went on to become a self-taught very accomplished musician.
From an early age Hannah enjoyed interpreting the world around through art. As a child she won numerous awards and competitions including the national Young Artist of the Year.
Hannah studied Fine Art in Exeter and then in Southampton. She specialised in print-making at university but also started selling paintings of animals. Through observing people and animals from life and the careful study of anatomy, she passionately attempts to capture not only the intricate detail and physical likeness of the subject but also the personality of each in a unique pastel painting.
She has been influenced by the animal work of George Stubbs and his anatomy work, Sir Alfred Munnings and Frank Wootton, Susan Crawford with the way they seem to capture the spirit of the animal and Mark Wallinger with his curious postmodern philosophies concerning racehorses.
Having worked in pastels, Hannah also experiments in other media. As a Christian she likes to reflect her beliefs by creating inspirational pictures digitally. These images attempt to challenge and evoke both faith in God and human emotions.
Hannah has painted portraits for major companies, newspapers and magazines. Work has been seen on BBC TV. She helps raise funds for the local RSPCA animal shelter by offering a pet portrait as a prize the raffle. She has run workshops for international students teaching them both English and art techniques. She has been commissioned by a company to paint some very large abstracts in acrylics. She regularly has trade stands at dog and horse shows and has had national exhibitions. She receives commissions internationally.
Hannah lives with her mother in south Devon with three Asian cats.
