“There is much darkness in the world; I seek to find the colour that is often hidden beneath the surface.”
Born and brought up in Devon, I first studied at Exeter College of Art in the late 1960’s. I then continued my studies in London where I gained a BA Hons in Fashion/Textiles from the prestigious St Martins School of Art. During the 1970’s I worked in design, exhibiting my textile work widely, later teaching both in schools and further education.
Since the year 2000 I have been seriously painting here in my studio in Exmouth. I mainly work in oils and oil pastels, my subjects being the East Devon Landscape and landscapes based on my travels in Italy; Venice, Tuscany and the coast line south of Naples.
My background in textile design has influenced my paintings; vibrant, bold shapes juxtaposed against one another. My use of a painting knife alongside brushes adds a textural feel to my painting. All my paintings are based on observational studies and are then carried out in my studio.
During the last year I have embarked on two new areas for my painting. The first is entitled ‘Café Society’, depicting modern café life with backgrounds of well-known cities. I am also at present working on a series of oil pastel drawings depicting ‘The Faces of India’, based on a recent trip I made to that country.
My work has been exhibited both in joint and solo exhibitions and I have sold my work both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Most of the paintings to view here are available as cards or prints.
Cards and prints are available of many of my works shown on this page.
