After a lifetime interest in photography Sophie studied at South Devon College to gain more technical knowledge. She immediately fell in love with the darkroom and the old methods and continues to use these methods as the basis for her work. The 'edging' she uses around her work is created by using an enlarged negative carrier and gives her work an aged look which reflects the old methods she uses. With her work she likes the viewer to feel like they are looking into a story, not just looking at a picture. The photographers who have influenced her work are Ansel Adams, W. Eugene Smith and Sebastiao Salgado. Sophie is currently working on an in-depth project on Devon’s coasts. Next year she plans to go to a specialised photographic college in Maine, USA to further her skills.
